Faculty Bio

Dr. Hilda Mata

Interim Director & Senior Lecturer, Romance Languages

I am a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Romance Languages at the University of Georgia. I hold a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Georgia and an M.A. in Modern Languages, with a concentration in Spanish literature, from the University of Delaware.

I have been teaching Spanish for over two decades. In the recent years, I have taught an array of courses, including SPAN3010 (Conversation & Composition), SPAN3020 (Advanced Spanish Composition & Conversation), and SPAN3050 (Introduction to Spanish Linguistics). Aside from my teaching duties, I hold the position of Assistant Director of the Language Resource Center in Gilbert Hall. My responsibilities include making technology more accessible to the faculty doing research on languages and linguistics.

I was born in Cuba but, at the age of 12, I settled with my family in the United States. I have been very fortunate to visit Costa Rica many times, six with UGA alone! I love the country and the people, and I cannot think of a better way for students to experience this beautiful place than participating in one of our programs!
