DONOR PROFILE
PLANNING TO MAKE THE FLOWERS BLOOM . . .
Cecil L. Collins

Cecil Collins (BSA '50) has always loved watching things grow, and it was only natural that Cecil study agriculture at UGA. After serving as a naval air gunner in the Pacific in WWII, he came home to study horticulture under the GI Bill. He also met Betty Wilson, whom he married before graduating from UGA.

Cecil's first job was as an assistant county extension agent, and from there he became a full county agent in Preston, Ga., where he and Betty remained for several years. Longing to be his own boss, he started a wholesale florist business in Augusta in 1954 with two of his brothers. Fifty years later it is the only such business in the Central Savannah River Area, now managed by Cecil and Betty's son Len (BBA '72) assisted by his brother Pat (a former UGA Bulldog football player). Len's daughter Caroline is currently the third generation of Collins to attend UGA.

After Betty's death in 2003, Cecil wanted to do something with his estate plans to benefit his alma mater and the floriculture program within the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. He had a number of appreciated yet underutilized stock holdings. By giving them in exchange for a charitable gift annuity, he was able to realize an immediate tax deduction, reduce his capital gains tax liability, and increase his income for life.

Eventually his gift will establish a permanently endowed fund called the Cecil L. Collins Floriculture Enrichment Fund within the Department of Horticulture. It will assist UGA students and faculty for years and years to come in making the world more beautiful through flowers.
