How The University Of Georgia Foundation Uses Its Funds
Learning CenterProviding deserving, high-achieving students with the means to pursue a quality education sits at the core of the University of Georgia Foundation's mission. A variety of scholarship programs established by the foundation ensure that the state’s best and brightest continue to fill the ranks of the university’s student body.

The most prestigious scholarship awarded by the foundation to undergraduate students is the Foundation Fellowship, established in 1972 to enhance the education of students with outstanding SAT scores and grades.

Foundation Fellows attending the University of Georgia (approximately 80 at any given time) receive full cost-of-attendance scholarships. Each fellow also is accorded full funding to participate in post-freshman year summer student programs, international travel-study awards, spring break travel-study programs, research and academic conference support, and countless opportunities to interact in various settings with distinguished UGA and visiting scholars.

Students invited to interview for the Foundation Fellowship, but not selected for the award, are offered the Bernard Ramsey Honors Scholarship, established by the foundation in 2000. Ramsey Honors Scholars receive a major scholarship which covers much of the cost of attending UGA and are provided with an international travel-study award.

The University of Georgia Foundation also funds other highly coveted and prestigious scholarships, including:

Charter Scholarships

  1. Charter Scholarships, merit based awards regardless of financial need.
  2. For first-year students for superior academic performance and the ability to add value to the campus through leadership.
  3. $1,000 annual scholarships, good for up to four years.
  4. May be combined with the HOPE Scholarship for Georgia residents.

Vice Presidential Scholarships

  1. Renewable awards: $1,200 to new first year students with strong academic backgrounds.
  2. Designed to help enhance UGA’s diversity.

Georgia Incentive Scholarships

  1.  Provides a renewable $5,000 award to the strongest students from graduates of seven Georgia Public High Schools. This school-based scholarship provides an incentive for students who probably would not have considered enrolling at UGA to seek new challenges at the university.

Georgia Community Scholarships

  1. The Georgia Community Scholarship is a one time grant of $1,000 to deserving students from Athens and surrounding counties.

National Merit Scholarships

  1. Students designated as National Merit Finalists are eligible for financial awards funded by the UGA Foundation, if they attend the University of Georgia under the College Sponsored National Merit or National Achievement Scholarship Program.

In addition to scholarships, the Foundation sponsors special recruiting events for high-achieving high school students and their families both on campus and in the students’ home communities. Admissions officers and university faculty and administrators present information on UGA’s academic strengths, discuss the Honors Program and other opportunities for involvement at UGA.

One hundred percent of unrestricted gifts received by the foundation are used to fund the Charter Scholarships and other programs that recognize outstanding teaching and academic performance; to recruit outstanding faculty; and to conduct activities or events that showcase the University of Georgia.

Other funds managed by the foundation, given in the form of “restricted gifts,” are earmarked for a specific college, school, department or program. These donations are deposited across 2,300 accounts established at the foundation by university vice presidents, deans, department heads and program heads. Based on requests from those in charge of each account, the foundation issues checks to fund scholarships, purchase equipment and pay for other expenses.

About 15,000 checks are issued each year totaling approximately $26 million.
